The Disc insulators have ball at the bottom and a socket at the top. It is an assembly of one or more shells with metallic fittings. They have means for non-rigid supporting.
In operation, it is always connected to insulator string. A suspension insulator set complete with the fittings is used to carry a line conductor or conductors at its lower end, so they can fit into another one and form a string as per the voltage requirement. At the bottom of the string there is a sort of clamp to hold the conductor. To prevent damage due to vibration, amour rods are fixed on the conductor at the point of suspension. The top end of the string is fixed to the cross arm of the tower.
